When most people hear the word hypnosis, they instantly picture a stage performer with a swinging pocket watch, commanding volunteers to dance, bark, or believe they’re stuck to a chair.
It’s entertaining. It’s dramatic. And it’s nothing like clinical hypnotherapy.
So, let’s clear up the confusion—and explore what hypnotherapy really is, how it works, and why it's all about putting you back in control.
Stage Hypnosis: The Entertainment Act
Let’s start with the flashier sibling—stage hypnosis.
This is the version of hypnosis designed purely for show. The hypnotist’s goal? To amuse an audience using volunteers who are already highly suggestible and up for a laugh.
Here’s what’s really happening:
Volunteers are pre-selected (either knowingly or via suggestibility tests).
There's subtle peer pressure and an implied “permission to be silly.”
The “trance” is shallow and performance-based—more about social compliance than deep transformation.
Fun? Yes.
Therapeutic? Not even close.
Stage hypnosis is theatre, with a sprinkle of psychology. But if you’re looking for deep healing, this isn’t where you’ll find it.
Clinical Hypnotherapy: The Healing Tool
Now let’s talk about the real power of hypnosis: clinical hypnotherapy.
This is a collaborative, therapeutic process that helps you access your subconscious mind—the place where your habits, beliefs, emotional responses, and internal narratives live.
In this space, we can:
Reframe past experiences
Shift limiting beliefs
Change automatic behaviours
Build resilience, calm, and clarity
It’s like updating the software that runs quietly in the background of your mind—so your thoughts, emotions, and actions start working for you, not against you.
And here’s the most important part:
You are always in control.
You hear everything, remember everything, you can speak, move, or open your eyes at any point. You can never be made to do anything you don’t want to do.
Hypnotherapy is not about taking control—it’s about giving it back to you.
What Can Clinical Hypnotherapy Help With?
If it involves the mind… it’s likely hypnotherapy can help.
Here are just a few of the areas where I support clients:
Anxiety & stress reduction
Confidence & self-esteem building
Fear of public speaking or social anxiety
Phobia release (flying, spiders, needles—you name it)
Weight and emotional eating support
Smoking cessation
Insomnia and sleep challenges
Motivation, performance, and goal achievement
Trauma processing and emotional healing
It’s not magic. It’s neuroscience, compassion, and connection—working together to create real, lasting change.
What Happens in a Session?
If you’re new to hypnotherapy, it’s completely natural to feel curious—or even a little unsure. So, let’s walk through what you can expect:
Step 1: We Talk
Before your session, you’ll usually be sent an ‘Intake Form’ online to complete. This helps me gain a clear understanding of what you’d like to achieve, as well as how you naturally process the world—whether you're more visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, or a mix. This insight allows me to tailor the language I use during the session, so your subconscious mind connects easily with what I’m saying.
When we meet, we’ll begin by exploring your responses together. It’s a chance for me to get to know you more deeply—your goals, your story, and the patterns you’re ready to shift. From there, we shape the session around you.
Step 2: You Relax
You’ll be seated—or reclined—comfortably, and I’ll gently guide you into a calm, focused state using soothing language and visualisation. You remain fully awake and aware, simply entering a peaceful, heightened state of mental clarity. Many people describe it as feeling similar to a daydream—deeply relaxed, yet present. I’ve experienced this state myself many times, and I can tell you: it’s wonderfully calming and restorative.
Step 3: We Work with Your Subconscious
In this space, I offer carefully crafted suggestions based on what you want to achieve. Your subconscious takes in those suggestions like fertile soil receiving new seeds.
Step 4: You Return, Empowered
After the session, you’ll return to full alertness feeling calm, refreshed, and often surprisingly clear. The changes may feel subtle at first, like a gentle shift beneath the surface—but they tend to ripple outward in meaningful ways. Sometimes the transformation continues to build over several days, as your subconscious integrates the new patterns and insights at its own natural pace.
In Summary: Empowerment Over Entertainment
Here’s the bottom line:
Stage hypnosis is a performance.
Clinical hypnotherapy is a partnership.
If you’ve been hesitant to explore hypnotherapy because you’re worried about “losing control,” let me reassure you—real hypnotherapy gives you more control, not less.
It helps you shift from reacting to life, to responding with clarity and choice.
So no—you won’t bark like a dog. But you might stop biting your nails, finally feel confident speaking in public, sleep peacefully for the first time in years, stop smoking, find clarity, rewire limiting beliefs, and break free from patterns of self-sabotage—to name but a few ways clinical hypnotherapy can support you.
And that’s the kind of transformation worth showing up for.
